The Muslim student association of UT Tyler has started their first meeting for the spring 2017 semester on Thursday February 16th, 2017 at 4 pm in the pharmacy building on the UTTyler campus in room 262, to lay down the plans that the MSA will do for the rest of the semester.
The first thing we discussed was that there will be class every Wednesday from 1 to 2 pm at the rbn in room 2012. These classes include basic tafseer or tajweed, and roots of Islam (but not Islamic studies). The plan is that one week they will be doing stories, while the week after will be tafseer. They plan on holding a big event on campus with food, and invite people to attend the classes from there, and if the event is big enough, then we can call the press.
The MSA will start their classes next week, which consists of Quran and Islamic Studies, and they will have a room up until the month of May. However, they will not hold their usual Arabic classes like they have. They plan to advertise classes and then start those classes. The classes are planned to start on March first, and will be held once a week for the rest of the semester. For the classes, everyone can bring a topic to discuss.
We watched a YouTube video for the Comedian Danish, and we asked when he is available, and he will be in our area from April 9th to 11th.
Showdown is going to be April 14th at San Antonio Texas, where every university in Texas with a MSA will meet together for competitions, that include: Islamic studies, tajweed, poems, basketball, art, writing, stand up poetry at the end before the videos, and nasheed (where guys and girls enter separately). However, we cannot fill it out until after the meeting. The lone star council of the MSA will be hosting the event. The MSA of the university of Texas at Tyler will be going with the students from TJC and from high school. There will be a virtual meeting online next week.
The MSA will hold a food sale next Friday on February 24th to raise funds, and they also have about $1200 and $500 from the SGA. Wardah Khaled is a speaker who may be coming, but we will hold off on the speakers for now. There will be a Q&A session event, and there will be one in every class.
They will volunteer at the autism marathon in April 1st, plan on handing out medals. The MSA has also done adopt a highway near the mosque in Tyler. The students also plan to volunteer on march 26th for the east Texas food bank.
This Sunday February 19th 2017, from 2 to 4 pm, there will be a women’s group gathering at the masjid, where women from different religions will be attending.
The MSA plans on doing prayers on campus. Islamic week is in March, where every day from march 20th to 24th, they plan on doing a big speaking event, with sponsorship from Taj Mahal. There will be coffee and bagels, with a try a hijab booth, snow cone, pizza and popcorn. There will be a table cloth printed with the MSA logo on it.
That concludes the first meeting of the Muslim Student Association at the University of Texas at Tyler for the spring 2017 semester.2/16/2017First MSA Meeting 2017The Muslim student association of UT Tyler has started their first meeting for the spring 2017 semester on Thursday February 16th, 2017 at 4 pm in the pharmacy building on the UTTyler campus in room 262, to lay down the plans that the MSA will do for the rest of the semester.
