The annual community meeting took place on May 13th, 2017 at 6:25 p.m. at the East Texas Islamic Society (ETIS), lead by Gamal Abdul Hafeze, who did a workshop and presentation on different kinds of drugs and how the internet is used as a recruiting tool for extremists groups.

Drugs

Energy drinks are not considered drugs, but they are just the beginning, because they are used to hype up the teenagers, and when the teenagers find out that the energy drink is not effective enough, then they will try to find something stronger, and the schools will offer the students stronger substances. First the dealers at the school will offer something stronger for free, and then the dealers will charge money as soon as the students get hooked on it, which will lead to the buying students to steal, cheat and sell items.

Marijuana

Cookies have been mixed with marijuana, and were used to be sold to students at school. Eventually the school began getting suspicious, because many students wanted "cookies."

Hydro Marijuana VS Mexican Marijuana

Hydro is $2000 to $5000 per pound and contains 20-30% THC, and it also comes from Canada into the United States.

Wax, Dabs, Budder

These substances make the drugs stronger.

Prescription Drugs

There has been a 300% increase in painkillers (oxycodon, ect.), stimulants, and anti-anxiety, and they are really dangerous. These substances need to be removed from the home, because he used the analogy of not putting fire next to the oil and say that Allah (God) will keep them separate.

Cheese

The new face of heroine.

Potential indicators of self-radicalization include: isolation/ fractured relationship with family, name change to one that is aligned with an ideology, change in physical appearance: dress, grooming/cutting hair, etc., change in social affiliations: may disassociate from former friends/ relationships in favor of people who share their new ideology, adherence to extremist resources and/or practical affirmation, expressed perception that others threaten the individual and his or her new found beliefs or religion, vocalized concern with the policies affecting their new ideology, communication with or contacts with extremists, consumption or searching of videos and/or propaganda from radial media sources, active participation in blogs, chat rooms or password protected websites, which are known to be frequently used by extremists or individuals engaged in self-radicalization. Pursuit of religious knowledge from a person or constitution protecting extremist views. Acknowledge or implied association with radical groups. Lose of interest in school and education, begins to give away his personal effects, desperate lose of money by selling some personal items. Weapons training, which includes some exercises, and acquiring gear, weapons, explosive devices or the components needed to make the bombs. These people will also research the internet for potential targets for extremist acts or acquiring the technical capabilities to do so. These groups express acceptance, approval and how to conduct attacks. They use the cover term of "care words" to mask the true meaning of events or other conflict activities. Suspicious foreign transactions used for suspicious travel potential (which are one way, claims of lost passports, etc.).

So what should parents do? Parents should be aware of indicators, talk to their child all of the time and discuss issues, even the ones that you do not feel comfortable discussing. Talk to peers and students, and ask questions and listen to and observe their responses, make notes of suspicious activities, get to know your child's friends and their families, visit with their friends for a while when they are with your child.

If a parent feels that something is not right, they should contact the mosque's leadership and ask for help. Do not take no for an answer, because no one knows a child better than the parents. Ganal Abdul-Hafiz welcomes people to contact him.
